VINTAGE and HISTORIC FESTIVAL
Donington Park 2003

The VSCC race meeting had 'Tribute to Ayrton Senna' as its theme and incorporated 'The Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy Meeting' but I was there to see the Maseratis entered for the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge races. This was my first ever visit to Donington Park and it represented the best value for money that I have received all year; and I was only there for three hours on the Saturday morning; a family commitment that evening meant I had to leave early and miss most of the fun!

Those who were fortunate enough must have enjoyed some spectacular motor racing, if the events in practice were anything to go by! When so much effort is put into organising such an event as this, it is a great pity that more enthusiasts weren't able to attend!

Those who couldn't or didn't bother to make it this year should make a real effort to go next year. It really was that good!

You can see from these photographs the calibre of the classic Maserati race cars that took part, add to this the Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, Bentleys, Lagondas, ERAs, Rileys, Bugattis, Coopers, Conaughts, Lotus', Lolas, MGs and many many more and you begin to understand what I mean.

This was the third round of the season for the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge which provided spectacular action on the 3.125 km (1.953 miles) Donington track last weekend. The historic Ferrari and Maserati cars are split into three grids, depending on their year of construction and technical specification.

Ferrari’s F1 Clienti department provided a number of Ferrari F1 cars from the recent past plus a little extra entertainment from a F2001 driven by Andrea Bertolini, one of Ferrari's test drivers.

On my way out I stopped to take a look around the Donington Grand Prix Collection, the world's largest collection of F1 Grand Prix Cars; well worth a visit!

Situated outside the front entrance to the Collection is a most wonderful memorial to Ayrton Senna and Juan Fangio, with magnificent bronze sculptures of both drivers and a 'Roll of Honour'listing the Grand Prix victories of these two great drivers.

1966 3-litre Cooper-Maserati T81. Cooper chose Maserati V12-cylinder engines to power their cars in the new 3-litre F1 of 1966, John Surtees gave them their first major win since 1962 in the Mexican Grand Prix ending that season. This car was owned and raced by the late Jo Bonnier but like its sisters, suffered from being heavy and unwieldy. Be3st performances (F1-5-66): Bonnier 3rd Silverstone International Trophy 1966. 6th Mexican GP, 1966. 5th German GP, 1967. 6th United States GP, 1967.

1934 Maserati Tipo 8CM. 2.9-litre supercharged engine producing 220-240 bhp @ 5500-5800 rpm. This wide chassied car, no 3018, was Tazio Nuvolari's personal car for the 1934 race season and was fitted with a Wilson pre-select gearbox.

1948 Tipo 4CLT/48, the 'San Remo' Maserati. This type, made famous by Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi, also gave Fangio one of his first Grand Prix victories.

This car, chassis no 1595, with its 1½-litre supercharged engine, was campaigned by Reg Parnell as a privateer.

1955 Maserati Tipo 250F, the 'Classic' racing car. To appreciate its majesty, one only has to look at the pictures of Jual Manuel Fangio in a full-blooded high speed drift. This car, chassis no 2515, was a Works car driven by Cesare Perdisa, Robert Mieres and Peter Collins before being sold to private teams. Finally retired in 1959, hopelessly outdated but finished with dignity.

1934 Derby Maserati, 125 bhp 1½-litre supercharged engine and front-wheel drive.

The sole survivor of the Derby factory cars and is the holder of many speed records in the hands of Mrs. Gwenda Stewart.
