Lot 237 - 1980 Maserati Kyalami

Chassis Number: AM129*0033*
Engine Number: 0033
Odometer reading: 42,380 miles
Estimate: £10,000-£14,000

For the origins of the Maserati Kyalami we must go back to 1972. That year, at the Turin Motor Show, De Tomaso Automobili launched their 'Longchamp', a two-door coupe. By 1975, Maserati was in the hands of a partnership between Alejandro De Tomaso and GEPI. Given Maserati's financial restraints, his solution was to call in Pietro Frua's design studio in Turin to re-style the Longchamp and so was born the Kyalami. The Kyalami, factory designated the Tipo 129 and launched it at the Turin Motor Show in 1976. The Kyalami didn't follow the Maserati Mistral, Ghibli and Khamsin tradition of naming models after a wind, but followed another tradition of naming its cars after the scene of its racing successes. This model was named after one of the world's great racetracks, Kyalami in South Africa, where in 1967 a Maserati-engined Cooper, driven by Pedro Rodriguez, won the South African Grand Prix; the Cooper Maserati was powered by a 12 cylinder Tipo 10/F1 engine.

This very rare right-hand drive Maserati was built in 1980. In its production run from 1976 to 1983, over 200 Kyalamis were built, of which only 43 were imported into the UK in right-hand drive. Presented in red with a tan interior, it is reported to be in good condition throughout with the vendor having had the fuel system restored and work carried out to the suspension and brakes, the engine runs very smoothly and the rare five speed ZF manual gearbox changes easily. An rare opportunity to buy a much sought after right-hand drive classic Maserati.

The weekend meeting at Ferrara took participants to the Circuito di Pomposa for a series of timed regularity and driving tests on the Saturday morning. Lunch with a typical Romagnolo menu was followed by a visit to the historic Basilica of Sant'Apollinare di Classe, a basilican church near Ravenna.

On the Sunday morning following breakfast they drove to Comacchio to visit the Manifattura dei Marinati, where the traditional dish of marinated eels is produced. This was followed by a visit to the Abbey at Pomposa.

Bertolini takes the Swiss Team Maserati Quattroporte to a maiden win at Valencia

Maserati cruised to an historic win at Valencia, in the second round of the 2011 INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTARS SERIES. Aboard his Swiss Team-prepared Quattroporte, Andrea Bertolini also captured his first win in the 500-horsepower saloon car championship by dominating the whole distance on Race 1.

The Mercedes C63 AMG fielded by CAAL Racing for Luigi Ferrara prevailed on Race 2. Thanks to a flying start, the Apulia-based racer managed to take the lead early and was able to top Bertolini. Thanks to the points scored, he also clinched the lead in standing. Max Pigoli also tried to move on the Maserati racer in the closing stages, before settling for third on his Mercedes, while after having ended up in third on Race 1, Thomas Biagi secured fourth place in front of BMW team-mate Stefano Gabellini.

The weekend finished in the same exciting way it started at the "Ricardo Tormo" Circuit. The championship's Spanish outing was marked by some extremely balanced yet hard-fought races, as confirmed by the four different winners had in the first four races of 2011.

The next round for the INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTARS SERIES will be at Portimão (May 21, 22). The Algarve racetrack will be providing the same sensational action enjoyed by the fans at Valencia.

Race 1 (top-5): 1. Andrea Bertolini (Maserati Quattroporte - Swiss Team) 16 laps 27’31”225;
                        2. Luigi Ferrara (Mercedes C63 AMG - Caal Racing) 1”559;
                        3. Thomas Biagi (BMW M3 E92 - Team BMW Italia) 11”791;
                        4. Max Pigoli (Mercedes C63 AMG - Romeo Ferraris) 14”396;
                        5. Stefano Gabellini (BMW M3 E92 - Team BMW Italia) 17”155.

Race 2 (top-5): 1. Luigi Ferrara (Mercedes C63 AMG - Caal Racing) 16 laps 27’34”945;
                        2. Andrea Bertolini (Maserati Quattroporte - Swiss Team) 0”761;

LOT 92: 1996 Maserati Ghibli GT #ZAM336B00*00400168*

Coming up for auction at Brightwells' Classic Vehicles Sale on Wednesday 11th May 2011 at 2pm is this 1996 Maserati Ghibli GT. Finished in Giallo Ginestra with black leather interior, this 2.8-litre example with automatic transmission has covered only 42,000 miles.

"Believed to be one of just 133 Maserati Ghibli 2.8-litre cars made in right-hand drive, this 1996 example has had just four owners from new and has only covered some 42,000 miles to date. It was originally owned by a wealthy Hong Kong banker but was imported to the UK in 2002 with only a couple of thousand miles on the clock.

Although the car was originally silver, the new owner wanted something a bit more special and treated the car to a full glass-out respray in Giallo Ginestra, a factory option colour that it sports to this day (the new Maserati paint code is on a plate in the boot). The wheels are the original GT ones which the current owner has had painted in a metallic black finish.

The vendor states that: “This car has never wanted for anything – if it needed doing it was done. There are receipts for over £22,000 in the service file. It has just had a major service at Dick Lovett of Cardiff including the big engine-out timing chain and cam belt service. They have looked after the car since I have owned it – if anyone wants to speak to them about the car, call Lovett’s and ask for Tina Wheeler. I have also had the front end painted after some vandal damage in a car park. This car goes like the desert wind it was named after and is in tip-top shape. I doubt you would find a better example anywhere.”

Fitted with a Thatcham Category One alarm immobiliser, the car also benefits from satnav and a premium sound system. MOTd and taxed until the end of August, it is ready for immediate use and is sure to give its new owner a huge amount of pleasure - and the kudos of casually dropping his Maserati key fob on the bar…
"

Estimate: £8,750 - £9,750.

MASERATI STARS IN
HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER “LIMITLESS”

Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper choose the GranTurismo for their latest thriller.

The thriller tells the tale of a 'magic' pill that is able to enhance the powers of the mind and stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. Co-starring is a Maserati GranTurismo in Grigio Granito with Avorio interiors.

When casting the role, Universal Studios and Relativity Media were on the lookout for a car that boasted style, class and breathtaking performance. The GranTurismo ticked all the boxes as it has all these characteristics, with its powerful 4.2 litre (405 hp) and 4.7 litre (440 hp) engines, and lines that are elegant and harmonious.

To U.S. Vanity Fair journalist Brett Berk, movie star Bradley Cooper said “Oh. Yeah. There’s just one shot in the film where I didn’t drive it. The rest, I was driving. The thing about the Maserati is, it’s a beautiful car [...]. But it’s also the perfect mix of luxury and sport. [...]”

This is not the first time that a Maserati has made a screen appearance: in fifty years of cinema, actors of the calibre of Alberto Sordi, Vittorio Gassman, Donald Sutherland, David Niven, Peter Sellers and Alain Delon have all climbed behind the wheel of a Maserati.

In the past decade, Jerry Weintraub, producer of ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’, opted for the Quattroporte as the star of the ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ follow up. Maserati's flagship model also played a central role in the second season of TV series 'Entourage' and the 2008 movie 'Max Payne' directed by John Moore and starring Mark Wahlberg. In 2003, in ‘Charlie’s Angels II’, a Maserati Spyder Cambiocorsa driven by Robert Patrick was the car of choice for accompanying Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. Last, but not least, nobody can forget Eva Longoria driving her Spyder down Wisteria Lane in season one of ‘Desperate Housewives’.

"Je suis l'heureux propriétaire d'une Maserati 4200 Coupe totalisant 265,000 km et qui marche du feu de Dieu ! Je pense que c'est le record du monde, ou à tout le moins d'Europe. Cela vous amuserait-il de faire un sujet prenant le contre-pied des idées généralment recues sur ces belles italiennes; pas fiables, mortes à 60,000 km, à ne pas acheter d'occasion ?"

"I am the proud owner of a Maserati 4200 Coupe totalling 265,000 km, and which goes like lightning! I think it's a world record, or at least a record in Europe. That should amuse you enough to write an article taking the opposing view from that generally associated with these beautiful Italian machines; unreliable, dead at 60,000 miles, don't purchase a used example ?

"Hi Enrico,

How are you ? Feeling good after the wedding ?

Sunday I was at this car show near home. I found a very small place for my BMW 700 - www.youtube.com.

A lot of nice old cars. A very good day.

I saw this OSCA, but nobody was near by to get details. Pictures for your records.

Still awaiting for the Ghibli - www.youtube.com. It begins to be very long....

I recently found the last picture on a web site. Nice gloves.... But, can she take off her shoes on the bonnet ?

Have a good day.

Amicalement,

Jacques."

THE EMBLEMS SPRING CHARITY EVENT - 28th May 2011

The EMBLEMS SPRING CHARITY EVENT, in aid of the Fovant Badges Society, will take place on Saturday 28th May 2011.

All of you that attended last year's inaugural event will know just how the socialising and good food at the Emblems Restaurant followed by a fast run up the Gurston Down Hillclimb makes for a very enjoyable day. This year’s event follows a similar format with one important change. The invitation to join us is extended to owners of that other great Italian sports car – Ferrari.

The event will start at the Emblems Restaurant, which is on the A30 close to Fovant, where a three course lunch with an Italian menu will be served in the restaurant which has panoramic views of the famous Fovant Badges carved on the hillside. During lunch a very short talk, on the history and the significance of these national monuments to all those who remember the sacrifices made by British and Commonwealth armed forces over the years, will be given.

We will then drive the short distance to the Spring British Hillclimb Championship meeting at Gurston Down where especially reserved parking has been arranged. Following the last timed event, we will then form up in the paddock for a Maserati/Ferrari run up the hill which will be a programmed event. Please supply a few details about you and you car because a full commentary will be broadcast on the track PA as we run up the hill.

Please note that inclusive tickets for this unique charity event are of necessity limited to 40 cars.

The price is £50 per head* a slight increase on last year.

ALL funds raised will be donated to the Fovant Badges Society, a registered charity, for the continued upkeep of the badges. A raffle will also be held on the day in order to raise money for ‘Help the Heroes’.
