From Team Shamals in Japan

"Dear Sig. Enrico,

How are you? Long time no talk... :)

The 2010 Maserati Trophy race day was held on Saturday 20th March.

Fortunately the weather for our race day was fine, but we all had a torrid time getting to the circuit, as traffic was really bad all the way to the Fuji Speedway !!

Once we arrived and were ready to race, we all had great fun, with the Shamals performing particularly well!! But it was also true that the number of race entrants were significantly fewer this year, particularly for the Scuderia Trophy... probably due to the economic situation ?

At the end of qualifying, Kogu-san (black Shamal) was in pole position, followed by Ishikawa-san (blue Shamal).

  1. #43 Shamal, Kogu-san
  2. #45 Shamal, Ishikawa-san
  3. #46 Coupe Cambiocorsa
  4. #47 Coupe GT
  5. #42 Shamal, Abeshin-san
  6. #36 Shamal, Ikeda-san
  7. #40 Ghibli Cup, Matsuda-san
  8. #37 GranSport
  9. #38 Ghibli Open Cup
10. #41 Ghibli Cup
11. #44 Ghibli 2.0 GT
For the race, we had 11 cars competing in 4 seperate categories ... and so I should add, that nobody really knew the formal results! Ha! Ha! Ha!

The overall standings were:

  1. #45 Shamal, Ishikawa-san
  2. #46 Coupe Cambiocorsa
  3. #36 Shamal, Ikeda-san
  4. #47 Coupe GT
  5. #38 Ghibli Open Cup
  6. #40 Ghibli Cup, Matsuda-san
  7. #37 GranSport
  8. #41 Ghibli Cup
  9. #43 Shamal, Kogu-san +2 mins
10. #42 Shamal, Abeshin-san -3 laps (overheated)
11. #44 Ghibli 2.0 GT -7 laps

What happened... Kogu-san demonstrated a very impressive performance to the attending enthusiasts throughout the race, but unfortunately he had made a 'subtle' flying start and did not realize that he had incurred a “stop and go” penalty.

It was also interesting that a couple of engineers from DMS Automotive visited our pit garage and took a great interest in the engine bay of Kogu-san’s Shamal.

I am sure they were impressed by the performance of his Shamal, with its very straight-forward mechanical tuning!! I would also recommend that you take (borrow :) most of the photos from Kashima-san’s blog as usual. :)

Ciao!

Satoshi."

From Klaus in Denmark

"Dear Enrico,

I hope that you are fine and that springtime has come to you.

I have enjoyed all your new updates on your site - always interesting and informative as well as building the story of a great brand.

I have bought a maserati 3200 GTA last September, it is a super car, drives very nice - you can crouse and just enjoy the sound and the looks and you can speed and enjoy the power and both things are done in a relaxed way. The looks of the car has always thrilled me because it has an organic form that pleases the eye.

I send you a few photos of the car. It has very nice light/beige leather interior.

Now that I have this 3200 GTA I would like to buy a model of it as well in scale 1:43 - however I have had no success in finding any place where I can buy one!!! Do you know of anybody who sell this model car?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Best regards Klaus."

From an Enthusiast in France

"Enrico,

I have been looking for a Maserati (my choice: Biturbo S, Biturbo Si, 222.4V, Maserati Quattroporte V8) for one and a half years now, all over Europe (especially France, Italy and Belgium).

First of all just a phone contact or a mail contact to see if the car had a service record, how it was used, works to do on it, etc. Didn't want to travel around 1,000 km for a dustbin.

After this first selection (80% of the cars were without any service history or without a basic guarantee (ex: engine doesn't start but this is nothing) and I am not talking about a Maserati service history, but general servicing), it was time to see and drive the car.

Of the 20% left, around 90% of the owners were liars. Indeed, they were supposed to have mint cars and that was not the case.

For example: the light of the Koni suspension system was red on a Quattroporte (owner said: "But it's okay, just change the bulb !!").

Strange noise at the back of a Biturbo Si (owner said: "This is nothing, it will only cost around 75 euros !!").

Strange noise from the engine (clac-clacl-a-clac): (owner said: "The engine has always had that amazing sound !!"). After taking a look through the service book, the timing chains had never been changed (car had covered 95,000 km).

To summerize, I didn't find what I was looking for: A Maserati with a full service history, in great condition, without any problems. The only two cars I found in that condition were sold in less than two weeks.

My conclusion is: with this survey I can tell than 90% of the Biturbos in this area are not reliable due to a lack of maintenance or a lack of knowledge. And, that is a great shame !!

Regards,

Un Appassionato."

Hi,

Sorry to hear about this.

I always think that buying a Maserati from a Maserati Club member is always a good way. Have you tried the Maserati Club France ? There maybe someone looking to change to a different model, and may be selling their present car.

Most club owners tend to look after their cars much better than the average owner. There are some exceptions of couse, but in general, not that many.

Also have you tried contacting a reputable Maserati workshop like Gargage du Trident in Paris or Candini in Modena to see if one of their customers has expressed an interest in selling their Maserati ?

If you would like, I can post your request on my site, and hope for the best.

Send me an email stating exactly the type of Maserati you are looking for, and I'll post it along with your experiences, which hopefully should deter any untruthful sellers.

Saluti,

Enrico."

So if there is anyone out there with a good left-hand drive Biturbo S, Biturbo Si, 222.4V or Maserati Quattroporte V8, with average mileage, a full service history (preferably from a Maserati expert), and in tiptop condition, email me at enricomaserati@btinternet.com and I'll pass the details on to him.

From Enrico in the UK

Hi,

I just spotted this interesting item on eBay.com.

A 1967 Maserati Ghibli #AM115*176*, manufactured December 21st 1967 to USA specifications. Red with Tan (saddle) Interior. Mileage 47,495 miles. 4.7-litre V-8 engine with four Weber carburettors and automatic transmission.

Described as:

"One of the most beautiful cars ever built, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Only 1149 cars built from 1966 to 1973. The Ghibli has been stored for over 15 years after much of the restoration work was completed. The frame-off restoration, beautiful paint job and the gorgeous new leather interior with new carpet under felt and headliner remain as good as they were when completed.

Original colors Red - but more burgundy (Rosso Rubino – Salchi) and the interior was White. Chrome bumpers have been replated.

The engine and mechanicals need the most work. Significant work was done on the block and heads. Seller believes that all major engine parts are present and much is new or rebuilt. Seller is unable to warrant that all parts are present or in working condition. Buyer is buying vehicle as-is.

I have some documentation on the work completed. Dent in left front quarter panel from transport mistake. I have owned this Ghibli and a 1975 Merak, also listed Item #250605766718, since 1987. Some really good work was accomplished at very significant expense."

Sale ends 2nd April 2010 - Further details available at www.ebay.com.

Many thanks to Terry King for allowing me to publish his photos.
