MASERATI GHIBLI OPEN CUP STRADALE

Ciao Enrico,

Neri Daniele."

Dear Enrico,

I am sending you a few photos of this quite particular Ghibli, chassis no. ZAM336B00*NB360224* produced in November 1992, and finished in Dazzling Black metallic and a black leather interior, with engine series type AM496.

Upon completion, it was immediately assigned to the “Direzione Tecnica del Reparto Sperimentazione” (Technical Management of the Experimental Department), under the care of Ivano Cornia, Carlo Sitti, Omar Barbieri, l'Ing. Gamberini and other technicians.

From then on, the car was used by the Reparto Sperimentazione right up to 1997 as an experimental vehicle for the development of chromatic, stylistic and mechanical solutions dedicated to the future Ghibli Cup and Open Cup.

This example was therefore the mule that the Reparto Sperimentazione employed to test and develop all the successive versions of the Ghibli, including the Cup (the road version) and Open Cup (the competition version), for both mechanical and chassis solutions, the interior, also styling and chromatics, and for this reason it could be considered to be the mother of the Ghibli Cup.

This car has benefitted from the continued modifications made during its tests, among those a new type AM577 engine, a clutch servo similar to that of the Barchetta, a 3.90 differential, 18-inch Tecnomagnesio wheels and a braking system with Brembo Gold series calipers and drilled and floating front discs. The shock absorbers remained standard but with a more rigid setting.

Aesthetically it retained many solutions of the Open Cup version, for example the bumpers, the larger NACA ducts on the engine bonnet, the rear boot lid with integrated spoiler, and the front and rear bonnet fasteners, whilst the side skirts remained as standard. For the front lights those of the Ferrari 355 were chosen because they were available for both left and right-hand drive. suitably framed the headlights are perfectly integrated into the shape of the Ghibli.

The interior trim finished in carbon, as is the steering wheel, and the pedals were identical to those of the Cup version, whilst the front and rear seats were finished in a black velveteen with red stitching and are the same as the Sparco seats of the Cup version. The styling of the rear exhaust tail pipes preempted those of the successive 3200 GT.

This Ghibli was prepared to be presented as the new Ghibli Open Cup Stradale (an attempt already made previously for the Barchetta), an extreme version that never made it into production.

The official presentation was supposed to have happened in December 1997 but with the passage of Maserati to Fiat, the new owners deemed to concentrate its investments on an entirely new model, the 3200 GT, so further work on the Ghibli Open Cup Stradale was abandoned. All that remains of that project is this car, that can be considered the mother of the Ghibli Cup and at the same time the descendant of the Ghibli Open Cup.

With the good council of Sergo Seghedoni (very well known in De Tomaso and Maserati circles) I purchased this vehicle with provenance direct fron the Maserati factory, in discreet circumstances, almost complete, and Iundertook a meticulous total restoration which affected every part; in addition to the engine, the transmission, the brakes, the paintwork, the electrical system and the interior with the precious assistance of Werther Sala (son of William Sala, notable preparer of the De Tomaso Pantera Gr.4, Gr.5 and the Ghibli Open Cup), Stefano Lodesani, Ivano Cornia (test driver and technician at the Reparto Sperimentazione Maserati) and the support of Carrozzeria Campana and the Candini Workshop in Modena who supplied many replacement parts, whilst the paintwork was carried out by Carrozzeria F.lli Meschiari di Concordia (Modena).

The radical restoration of the chassis has revealed all the modifications and work that the technicians and mechanics of the Reparto Sperimentazione had effected during the course of the years; I have to say that a lot of work was done, lightening it where possible and strengthening where necessary, eventually achieving a car that was both light and solid, and conferring on this example the quality of a “hand built” and so very special and exclusive in many areas.

The car had never been registered because it had always travelled with a factory “Prova” license plate, so, not without some difficulty, I have effected its first registration and have made its return to the road possible.

As well as the official documentation, it turns out that, before me, the car was used by Maserati test driver Ivano Cornia on the 7th April 1997 for a test that lasted 124 km.

The car had covered 13,778 km.

Neri Daniele."

LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW 2015

"Hi Enrico,

Here are a few photos of Maseratis seen at the recent London Excel Classic Car Show. Poor quality I'm afraid due to the poor light conditions !

In addition to these a Khamsin and (I think), a Sebring and a were there but only in the moving parade which was impossible to see for the large crowds - but the 250F sounded good.

Best regards,

Roger."

LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW 2015

Ciao Maseratisti,

Maserati UK were amongst other leading car manufacturers to display their wares at the inaugural London Classic Car Show held last weekend.

Among the cars on display along with the new Ghibli and a GranTurismo MC Stradale, were a Tipo 4CS, a 5000GT by Allemano and a 3500 GT Spyder Vignale. Apparently the 4CS, which is often seen on the track at classic race meeting, attracted much interest.

A TIMELY WARNING FOR US ALL !!!

Hi Enrico,

I would like to send you a copy of the emails I received during the last days.

"Hello !

First of all, I'm sorry for the late reply. I was away from the city (tasks) and I could not see, you can e-mail you früher. Wie, I do not know very well the German language. So you can write me in English next time (if you can). If not, I will try to read and write in German.

In any case, the car is still for sale, so if you are still interested, I will wait for your reply. The final price is 15,000 euros (I cannot fall lower). The car has never been in any accidents. It is in perfect condition (both mechanically and cosmetically). No hidden problems.

I inherited the car from my grandfather, who lived in Germany. This is the reason I have the car for sale in Germany. I thought I was going to sell it much faster.

I am selling it because I already have two cars and I cannot afford to pay additional taxes for another vehicle.

The car is now in Preston, Lancashire, GB. I am willing to ship it (I will pay half of the shipping costs).

If you decide to buy it, I need your zip code for the city to estimate the shipping costs.

I'll most likely wait for your reply.

Thank you and best regards !"

These emails are obviously a fake. Maybe you want to post a warning on your website. This man offers a car which has been advertised on ebay in the US some weeks ago and has been offered on this website: www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C548364 on December 15the 2014.

If you compare the photos on the carandclassic ad with the photo of the emails for me it seems to be the same car. This will mean, this car never has spent his life in Germany and also is not located in UK now.

I am not sure if you understand the translation of his German text, but this is what the seller writes in his email.

First I tried to stay in contact with those person to find out more details about the personality, and therefore I answered to this email. But now I am fed up with those kinds of “sellers” and this is the reason why I send this email to you.

I really hate those frauds, who use the internet for their criminal activities and make life miserable for us enthusiasts. Sometimes I really consider of stopping with this hobby (of driving oldtimers) and think about selling all my cars because buying and selling (= changing) of vintage cars is no more a thing for real enthusiasts. Quite the contrary, this becomes more and more a job for dealers and auction houses to make a big profit in a short time, as well as a dirty job for criminals.

With kindest regards – Alfred, a frustated Maseratisti."

MASERATI AT DETROIT AUTO SHOW
AND 2014 SALES RECORD

Showstoppers the Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition and Alfieri 2+2; concepts that look to the future and confirm the Made in Italy luxury of the Trident.

Monday, 12th January 2015 - Continuing the unstoppable momentum of 2014, a year which was the most successful in the Trident’s century-long history, Maserati presents at Detroit’s 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). In the spotlight, the range’s traditional blend of sports performance and “Made in Italy” exclusivity and the 2014 global sales results.

Maserati 2015 Detroit Auto Show: Alfieri concept

DETROIT AUTO SHOW

At Detroit this year, made-to-measure craftsmanship hits the road with the North American premiere of the Maserati Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Concept, which takes the stage alongside the stunning Alfieri 2+2 concept and the sumptuous yet versatile all-wheel-drive 2015 Maserati Quattroporte S Q4, now offered with a wider selection of product enhancements including new exterior colours, added content and trim options.

The Maserati Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Concept is the natural evolution of the partnership between these two historic Italian brands following last year’s very successful launch of the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition (which was limited to one-hundred units). With Ghibli now leading the Trident’s success in North America, as the top selling U.S. model within the Maserati range, it was the perfect choice for the marque’s latest concept design innovation.

Trivero-based fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna conceptualized the bespoke Ghibli S Q4 in close collaboration with Maserati’s design and engineering team, applying unique content and material applications never seen before. The result is a saloon with a dynamic and contemporary look, fashioned for the detail-oriented enthusiast and tailored for connoisseurs of luxury. The Ghibli Zegna serves to give renewed life to a current product, and features an exclusive new colour, Azzurro Astro and 20” wheels in a colour developed ad hoc. The interior has been designed to offer the ultimate in style and distinction, with Zegna-inspired materials and trims with special contrast colour combinations using the finest Italian leather and 100% Italian natural fabrics.

The Maserati Alfieri is a cutting-edge 2+2 concept that has toured the globe to much praise from collectors, press, customers and enthusiasts alike. Created to celebrate the Maserati Centennial, Alfieri explores the stylistic heritage of the brand and anticipates future design trends. The Alfieri reveals a sportier nature than the current GranTurismo model, re-establishing Maserati's racing DNA. Maserati has confirmed that the Alfieri coupe will be introduced in 2016, with an Alfieri convertible to follow thereafter.

Also displayed on the stand is the MY 2015 Quattroporte S Q4, which is now offered with a wider selection of product enhancements including new exterior colours, added content and trim options. This winter season, Quattroporte S Q4, equipped with all-wheel drive capabilities, continues to fuel the brand’s rapid growth in North America together with the appeal of the signature GranTurismo coupes and convertible models and entry level Ghibli saloon.

RECORD SALES IN 2014

In 2014, Maserati sold approximately 36,500 cars worldwide, an increase of 136% compared to 2013 and almost 6 times the sales figure for 2012. There was growth in all the main markets in which Maserati operates: the major milestone was achieved thanks to the sales volumes generated by the Ghibli, the brand’s first E segment executive saloon, followed by the Quattroporte, the luxury flagship saloon, and the exclusive range of GranTurismo and GranCabrio sports cars.

23,500 Ghiblis were delivered to the network, while the figure for the Quattroporte was 9,500 units. The total was completed by 3,500 units of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models.

The American market, with 14,690 units and growth of 110% compared to 2013, confirmed its status as Maserati’s biggest market in 2014, with sales boosted by the Ghibli and Quattroporte versions equipped with the 410 HP Twin Turbo engine and Q4 all-wheel drive.

The second largest market in terms of volume was China, with 9,400 units and growth of 148% compared to 2013; the best-selling Quattroporte and Ghibli versions were those with 330 HP Twin Turbo engine and rear-wheel drive.

In spite of the widespread economic instability, Europe also recorded a large rise of 153% compared to 2013, with no fewer than 6,360 units sold. The market leading Quattroporte and Ghibli versions were the rear wheel drive versions with the 275 HP V6 Turbo Diesel engine.

Performance in the Asia-Pacific area (excluding China) was excellent, with 4,000 units, representing a 206% increase over 2013.

The results achieved in the Middle East were also very impressive, with 2,050 units sold and a growth of 144% compared to 2013.
