MASERATI 200SI #2414

"Enrico,

Wonderful images of the Maserati 200SI that was owned by Jim Bruni at one point. Chassis 2414 had an interesting competition history as well.

In 1957 it was the very first Maserati sold by a new Trident distributor in Dallas, Texas, an outfit by the name of Carroll Shelby Sport Car Inc. Jim Hall's older brother Dick financed the venture, while his partner Shelby, who never paid in a dime, was happy to provide his reputation as a race driver for name recognition. Bob Ferguson of Fort Worth became the first owner of 2414. Married to the daughter of oil man Harold Gish of Fort Worth, Ferguson could well afford the car.

Bob Ferguson in chassis 2414 at Stillwater, Oklahoma, in September 1957.

He raced the car at Galveston, Stillwater, Eagle Mountain and Mansfield, after which his interests turned to OSCAs. Norm Scott, a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Houston, became the second owner of 2414, but ran it only briefly. By 1960 it shows up with its third owner, Jim Binford of Houston. By then the 2-liter Maserati unit had been replaced by a 3-liter Ferrari Monza engine. Its final appearance came at Hilltop, Louisiana, in the 1962 professional USAC race, where Bill Janowski was invited to race it for Binford. The car came ill-prepared and Janowski chose not to take the start. It was its last showing in the Southwest.

Best,

Willem."

"Hi Enrico,

Thank you for your advice and for advertising my engine on your website. It was a great help. The engine sold very quickly. It sold for full price.

I used to have a Maserati 200SI #2414 and I have attached a few pictures for you.

It was purchased in 1978 for $1,000. It had a Ford V8 in it, and didn't run. I bought an engine block, cylinder head and oil pan from Joel E. Finn for $5,000. I lived near him. Sold it in 1985.

I believe it is now in Italy. It comes up in an internet search, fully restored.

Thanks again,

Jim."

MASERATI BITURBO E

"Hi Enrico,

I spotted this nice low mileage example of a Maserati Biturbo E on the "Bring a Trailer" auction website, without a reserve, and thought your fellow enthusiasts would enjoy these excellent photos. These days, you don't see many examples as good as this one !!! Check out their description below.

"1985 Maserati Biturbo E

This 1985 Maserati Biturbo was purchased new in San Francisco and has remained in California since new. Now with the third owner, it was recently purchased from the estate of the second owner, a factory-trained Ferrari mechanic who purchased the car from Sonnen Motors in 1992 and stored it in the back of his shop since 1999. The car is well documented from new and free of serious corrosion. It was stored indoors with an empty fuel system and several gallons of oil poured in to protect the engine, and once acquired by the seller a service was performed including new fluids, filters, and a new fuel pump. The car runs and drives fine as shown in the video below, but should be gone over before adding serious miles. Sale includes the original window sticker, factory tools and extensive documentation from new.

Paint is believed to remain original and still presents nicely with no peeling clear or other major flaws. Trim is complete, glass is free of chips and cracks and all rubber including bumper trim, window gaskets and inner weatherstripping remains in good condition. OEM wheels are in good condition, and the only rust the seller can find is a small bubble under the passenger side taillight. The car is photographed in detail in the expandable gallery below. Here’s the car as found in the previous owner’s San Rafael shop. Note the orginal blue and yellow plates which are retained.

The car was given a professional detail inside and out and cleaned up nicely. All plastic lenses are well-preserved with no cracking or fading, doors open and shut well and panel gaps appear to be factory-set.

The interior presents similarly and the model’s comfy butterscotch leather looks well preserved. Wood veneers are equally nice, the leather dash top shows no cracks or and all gauges, lights and switches work including the sunroof. Carpets have been cleaned and the headliner does not sag.

The 36,085 miles shown on the odometer are believed to be accurate based on included maintenance records. Note the unique stock shift knob with dog-leg first gear.

The car’s original 18v, twin turbo, 2.5 litre V6 was preserved during storage and fired to life easily after a proper service. This was largely thanks to the removal of all fuel from the tank and lines, as well as what the seller says was several gallons of oil poured into the engine itself.

Getting the car running again required fitment of a new fuel pump, filter and gas as well as an oil change. Once connected to a fresh battery the seller says it fired quickly and soon settled into a smooth, steady idle.

Though it now runs and drives with good pick-up through all five gears, the seller says the new owner should perform a thorough going over and install new tires before embarking on a long trip or daily driving. Two additional lift shots are provided in the gallery, as well as one of the bare trunk floor. Sale includes all original manuals, tools, window sticker and extensive paperwork documenting service over the years."

Regards,

Jeff."

MASERATI SPARK PLUGS

"Dear Enrico,

I am writing to ask if you can help me with information on the following articles.

I have found a box containing ten of these spark plugs, and I don't know what car they are for, or if they may be of any interest to anyone.

However, I do not own a Maserati and they are of no use to me.

I hope that you can supply me with some information about these articles. I am writing from a small town in Spain, and I work for a small garage.

My name is Gesè.

I await your reply."

SCALEXTRIC AND MASERATIS

"Dear Maseratisti,

I recently purchased identical Scalextric Sport sets for my granddaughter and grandson. Unfortunately neither sets had Maseratis as their race cars, but were equipped with Bugatti Veyrons.

This I could not allow, so I searched the internet for slot car Maseratis and was pleasantly surprised by the volume of choice; from the Tipo 250F to the Trofeo Cambiocorsa, and Trofeo MC to the triumphant MC12.

Most cars are beautifully decorated in their racing livery, with working lights and magnatraction for improved road holding, which certainly comes in very useful when in the hands of over excited grandchildren, and yes, occasionally a racey grandfather !!!

I wonder how many Maserati Clubs have thought of investing in a Scalextric Maserati racing set-up for the benefit of their members ???

IL GRANDE RADUNO MERAK

"Ciao Enrico,

Buone Vacanze Enrico, e a presto !

Claudio.
"

"Hi Enrico,

As you know from the 24the to the 26th of July "The Great Merak Gathering" took place on Lake Como, an interesting experiment for a single model rally, a type of event that is widespread in some countries (such as Japan), whilst in Italy it is very rare.

The rally was initiated and organized by a very capable Greek gentleman, Dimitrios Michelinakis, and his wife Anastasia. Unfortunately there is still no Maserati Club in Greece, but Dimitrios is the reference point for Maserati collectors in that country, and is also ever present representing his country at the International Maserati Rallies.

As part of the weekend's meeting, attended by about 15 Meraks from all over Europe, as well as a crew from Australia !!!! I, although not possessing a Merak, attended the dinner on the Friday evening to offer Dimitrios my personal greetings and those of the Maserati Club Italy, as several members of the Maserati Club Italy attended the rally, including two members of the committee (Antonio Vivenzio and Antonello Salvi) who both came up from Rome with their Meraks, and also the very Dimitrios, a fellow member who often attends our meetings in Italy. In fact, as a club we were pleased to offer him support in popularising this event with our members.

Dimitrios is a super-fan of the Merak and an administrator for the Merak Registry at www.merak-registry.com/.

Happy Holidays Enrico, and see you soon !

Claudio."

"Dear Enrico,

Here are the pics from this year's Oldtimer Grand Prix at Nürburgring. Feel free to post them.

Was great to meet other Maserati enthusiasts.

Unfortunately I didn't see the 5 x 250 F or the 300S or the 200S which were supposed to race.

Maybe they were well hidden.

All the best,

Dirk."
